AllMusic Review by

This swinging Concord release teams together the young veterans Scott Hamilton (on tenor) and cornetist Warren Vache with former Ellingtonians Harold Ashby (also on tenor) and altoist Norris Turney as part of George Wein's 1987 Newport All-Stars. In addition to those four fine soloists, tenorman Al Cohn is a guest, bassist Slam Stewart (in what would be his final recording before his death a few months later) contributes some delightful wordless vocalizing in unison with his bowed bass, drummer Oliver Jackson is excellent in support and pianist Wein shows off his roots in Earl Hines. The group jams through seven swing standards including a 10 1/2 minute version of "Love Me Or Leave Me." Easily recommended to mainstream collectors, this date lights plenty of sparks.
