Billed to Youssou N'Dour, Youssou N'Dour and His Friends is actually a various-artists collection of music from Senegal. While most of it is the slickly produced mbalax that N'Dour is best known for, there are a couple surprises as well. "Lang," by N'Dour, is a surprisingly traditional effort, and the backing string arrangement on "Xaley Rewmi" is as wonderful as it is unexpected. It's nice to hear a little something different from one of Senegal's leading musical voices. [A U.S. version was also released.]
