AllMusic Review by

Although it contains none of their post-1966 work -- which is arguably their most well-known music -- this double-CD set can make a strong case for being the best of their early era, on Transatlantic Records. There's no "Whiskey in the Jar," but there are large chunks of the group's three albums for the label (most notably Finnegan Wakes), as well as a good sampling of the bonus tracks that have turned up on reissues of those albums. It's no substitute for the complete versions, but it's a fine sampling of the group's early work and the annotation is thorough and full as well, and the sound is excellent. Officially one disc is studio work and the other is live, though considering that all three of their Transatlantic albums were concert recordings -- and that they essentially played live in the studio -- this seems to be a distinction without much difference, and it's all good.
