AllMusic Review by

The Glyndebourne production of Engelbert Humperdinck's fairy tale opera Hänsel und Gretel had an updated staging in modern dress, but the musical aspects of the performance were true to the work's Wagnerian inspiration. Robin Ticciati led the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a sensitive and refined reading that preserved all the warm tone colors and sweet sonorities that make the opera such a treat for children. The cast, starring Alice Coote as Hänsel, Lydia Teuscher as Gretel, and featuring Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke as a campy Rosina Sweet-Tooth (the Witch), is lively, charming, and fully engaged, though the serious roles of the parents are somewhat less fun, as sung by William Dazeley and Imgard Vilsmaier. The rich and resonant reproduction is exceptional by any standard for a live opera performance, approaching super audio sound in its clarity and depth, and the two CDs are packaged in a hardcover book which is filled with informative liner notes and full color photographs of the production. This is a classic rendition of the opera, sure to be a favorite among Glyndebourne fans for years to come.
