The tracks dusted off to form Emissions Audio Output: From the Archive, Vol. 1 originated on Swimming Not Skimming, The Fifth Mission, and Stockwell Steppas -- full-length 1996 and 1997 releases on Swordsman Andrew Weatherall's Emissions Audio Output label. Perhaps the questions raised by the selections here will be answered with successive volumes in the series; this doesn't represent the absolute best of its sources. Nonetheless, it amounts to a pleasing trip through a specific phase in the 2LS discography, one that will be especially valuable to younger listeners whose frame of reference begins somewhere around Boards of Canada's first album. Nearly everything on this disc has held up well, from the steely, dank corridors of "Paisley Dark" to "Spin Desire," where the giddy jitter of Derrick May's "Salsa Life" is transformed into an unnerving, shadow-casting skulk.
