Big Leaves' two-song Electro Magnetic Pollution EP -- recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales, with Tim Lewis (aka Thighpaulsandra of Spiritualized) producing -- finds this Welsh band at its most accomplished and sophisticated yet. The vocals are also in English. The title track is a slashing, Hunky Dory-ish glam venture. Rhodri Sion's wantonly seductive vocals ("You got me" is his submissive opening line) sound quite similar to Gaz Coombes (of Supergrass), while the band backs him up with an edgy T. Rex-styled riff, alternating between chiming acoustic guitar and saxophone. "Paladino's Pills (Hand of God)," meanwhile, is Merseybeat-influenced, with guitars, piano, drums, and percolating synth beats trading off with Mick Jagger-esque vocals; the lyrics were reportedly inspired by Argentine football champion Diego Maradona and his use of pills containing the drug ephedrine (Maradona's "hand of God" goal in the Argentina vs. England 1986 World Cup game was steeped in controversy).
