This five-LP box set goes in chronological order from 1930-39 and amazingly enough nearly all of its 70 performances are rare. The music ranges from dance bands and swing to personalities and vocal groups but the emphasis is largely on jazz with plenty of previously unreleased recordings and alternate takes along with some very obscure items. There are many highlights with everyone from The California Ramblers, Fletcher Henderson, Ruth Etting, Red Nichols and Bing Crosby to Phil Harris, the Four Blackbirds, Red Allen, Raymond Scott (with Jerry Colonna), Cab Calloway and Benny Goodman being heard. Collectors of music from the era will want to search for this box which was originally issued in 1977.
