Billy Taylor recorded a dozen original compositions with bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Ray Mosca for SESAC Repertory during this 1960 session, although they are all very brief and to the point, not really allowing much time for improvising upon his catchy themes. The perky "Warming Up" sounds like it would make a perfect theme song for a radio program, while other highlights include the dreamy ballad "Afterthoughts." This session is brief by LP standards at just over 32 minutes, while a Surrey LP reissue dropped both "Native Dancer" and "Uncle Fuzzy." The best bet is to look for the 1993 Fresh Sound CD reissue called Custom Taylored, which contains the complete session.
