AllMusic Review by

During a period of time when there were not that many recordings being made in New Orleans, the legendary (and at that point unrecorded) clarinetist Emile Barnes was documented playing with a fine pickup group that also included trumpeter Lawrence Toca and trombonist Harrison Brazlee. On this LP, the first of two volumes, Barnes is in good form on ten standards (including two versions of "St. Louis Blues"), playing a style of New Orleans jazz rarely heard anymore. There are some rough moments from the other players, but the spontaneity and joy of this music should win most New Orleans jazz fans over.
