AllMusic Review by

Over a three-year period, Earl Hines recorded four solo piano Duke Ellington tributes for the Master Jazz label. All of the music has been reissued on a pair of New World CDs. Hines recorded a ton of music during the era, but virtually every one of his releases is well worth getting. His chance-taking solos were sometimes hair-raising and always full of surprises. For this CD, Hines digs into such numbers as "In a Mellotone," "Solitude," "Don't You Know I Care" and "All Too Soon," coming up with fresh variations even on overplayed numbers such as "Satin Doll." Worth exploring.
