Steve Carr's rise to fame has been a quiet one. Hailing from Ipswich, his early outings found an outlet through Paul Arnold's legendary Certificate 18 label. From there he released material on a myriad of labels, including Metalheadz, Reinforced, Creative Wax, Photek Productions, and Moving Shadow. It's perhaps surprising, then, to find his profile flying into the stratosphere via the rave reminiscence that gripped jungle for close to three years and for which Carr, together with Total Science and the Spirit, was primarily responsible. This debut album for his own Function imprint is a study of this subgenre, with a swathe of grumbling Rastafari, bleeps, bloops, raging hoover mids, and the all-important detuned piano. The second mixed disc underlines the dancehall intentions.
