This album is a very good overview of percussive sounds around the world. It is a sampler of the entire ethnic percussion series from Playasound. It includes material from Africa, Asia, Brazil, Cuba, the Solomon Islands, and Polynesia. Some of the selections are quite catchy and entertaining. Others, like the hymn from Burundi and the marriage ceremony from Senegal, are more ethnographic in nature and seem to drag on laboriously. Despite these faults, it is an excellent compilation for anyone who wants a single-disc sampling of the sounds of the drums and percussion native to various regions of the world. Liner notes are in both English and French. A second volume has since been released.
