Instead of that crap idea of making "Can't Get There from Here" the single off Fables of the Reconstruction, why not pick one of the many high points on it instead? "Driver 8" is the next in line of those truly devastating R.E.M. singles, right up there with "South Central Rain" and "Radio Free Europe" (and on promo 12", "Pretty Persuasion") in its low-driving bounce, perfect verse melodies, big-payoff choruses, and Michael Stipe's cool, in-control vocals. "And the train conductor says take a break driver eight" -- it's like a mini-movie, or seeing an old train movie like Buster Keaton's The General or Thomas Edison's The Great Train Robbery in your head). It’s just plain timeless, like a record you like from 20 years ago instead of one you like from 20 days ago. And the B-side is an excellent cover of their fellow Athens, Georgia arty indie popsters Pylon’s best single, “Crazy.”
