Drew's Famous School's Out for Summer collects re-recordings of some of pop, rock, and rap's most escapist summer anthems, ranging from "Hot in Herre" to "Footloose" to "Rock Lobster." While the session musicians try their best to re-create the original songs -- and very nearly succeed on the aforementioned "Hot in Herre," as well as on "Holiday" and "Walking on Sunshine" -- these covers just don't sound as good as the original versions. Still, the collection is a pretty inspired mix of tunes, drawing from Motown ("Dancing in the Street"), classic metal ("School's Out"), soundtracks ("Summer Nights"), and contemporary pop ("Complicated," "Soak Up the Sun"). If it's not important to have the original renditions of these songs, then Drew's Famous School's Out for Summer might be a worthwhile compilation, but for most music fans it might be more useful as a template for creating their own summer mixes.
