On this budget reissue release from Drive Archive, 13 early Ella Fitzgerald records (eight with Chick Webb's band and five with the orchestra after the drummer's early death are included. With the exception of two numbers from 1935-36 ("I'll Chase the Blues Away" and "Organ Grinders Swing"), the music is all from 1938-41 when the young singer was finding her own musical personality. Since these recordings have been reissued in more complete form elsewhere, this particular CD is not essential but if found at a low price it is worth picking up. Highlights include "A Tisket, a Tasket," "My Heart Belongs to Daddy," "'Tain't What You Do," "Undecided" and "Sugar Blues."
