AllMusic Review by Dave Sleger

The debut album from the Whole Shabang! unveils their unique combination of American country and traditional Irish songs, along with original pieces by bandmembers and associates. They add an Irish flavor to Charlie Daniels' "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" and Jimmy Driftwood's "Battle of New Orleans," although the former lacks the intensity of its original version. This band also does little to explain why their rendition of the Steve Earle/Pogues song "Johnny Come Lately" was included; perhaps simply because they like the song. Two traditional pieces, "Holy Ground" and "Whiskey in the Jar," are given rousing treatments. Of all the original songs, "Rwanda Now" stands out -- a tuneful plea for awareness and action concerning that country's strife arranged in an Irish/reggae-lite manner.
