Encouraged by the critical and commercial turnaround achieved with their 1990 EP, Wolfsbane returned to the studio with producer Brendan O'Brien for 1991's sadly prophetic Down Fall the Good Guys. "Smashed and Blind" is a fantastic opener thanks to its foot-stomping guitar, catchy chorus, and "boys having a good time down at the pub" lyrics. Unfortunately, the track stands head and shoulders above the remaining, lackluster material, of which only "Black Lagoon," "The Loveless," and "Cathode Ray Clinic" retain any spark. "Ezy" is the throwaway hit single, "After Midnight" the throwaway power ballad, and the last three songs (ranging from the comic to the acoustic) are absolute filler.
