AllMusic Review by

This CD contains music from two different sessions. The first half of this reissue has seven of the eight selections recorded by the Bechet Big Four in 1940 (a group comprised of the leader on soprano and clarinet, cornetist Muggsy Spanier, guitarist Carmen Mastren and bassist Wellman Braud) and it is highlighted by several classics such as "China Boy" (which has some stunning Bechet), "That's a Plenty" and "Sweet Lorraine." The remainder of the set has seven of the dozen numbers recorded by Spanier in 1957 with his Dixieland band (which also includes clarinetist Joe Barufaldi and trombonist Bill Johnson). The latter sides are quite predictable as the sextet does its best to uplift such warhorses as "The Saints," "Muskrat Ramble" and "St. James Infirmary." Dixieland fans should enjoy this set.
