For Dolphins, their first record distributed through Italian lounge specialists Irma, Soul Bossa Trio illustrate their balance of taste and acumen -- taste as it relates to their choice of repertoire, and acumen in the way they skillfully interpret the originals. The songs here are ones that perfectly suit the group's pastoral, exploratory style -- the buoyant Return to Forever/Flora Purim standard "Light as a Feather," "Dolphins" from melancholy folk-rocker Fred Neil, and John Coltrane's expressive valentine "Naima." Vocalist Ann Sally makes her vocal limitations service the performances, matching the quavering tonal qualities of Steve Sacks' alto and flute. Courtney Pine has an excellent guest appearance, seeking a higher level with his solo on a Soul Bossa reworking titled "Sky."
