AllMusic Review by

For years, DJs around the world have been using old funk and soul records for beats. British DJ Pogo has opened up his crates and released a compilation of some of the best breakbeat records. Complete with informative liner notes, the album acts as a primer for those interested in breakbeats. Most of the tracks on DJ Pogo Presents the Breaks are widely used among DJs, but still relatively unknown to the general public. Highlights include Kool & the Gang's smoking instrumental "N.T.," King Curtis' Southern soul classic "Memphis Soul Stew," Bob James' jazzy, beat-filled cover of Paul Simon's "Take Me to the Mardi Gras," and the Commodores' "Assembly Line," which is easily the group's funkiest and most underrated song. While DJs have spent years chopping up these songs, this album proves that they are more than capable of standing on their own.
