Distance Review

by Jason Ankeny

Further closed out their frustrating, if often brilliant, career with this double 7" on the British boutique label Lissy's. In hindsight, their imminent dissolution was obvious -- three of the four sides comprise what appear to be solo recordings by each of the brothers Rademaker and Josh Schwartz, with only the final side credited to the group as a whole. Although Distance is almost impossible to find, the set includes some of Further's strongest material: Darren's "Springfield Mods" and Brent's "Spheres of Influence" wrap classic pop melodies in bows of lo-fi noise, while "Sea-a-Suka-Tika" conjures surf music gone horribly -- yet wonderfully -- wrong.
