Rhino's Disco Hits compilations act as redundant, skimpy, budget-line versions of their excellent Disco Years discs. Each volume of the Disco Years series featured well over a dozen tracks, while each Disco Hits adheres to a strict ten-song cutoff. In a way, this alternate approach was an opportunity squandered, since the empty space on each disc could've been filled out with the favoring of each track's original mix -- meaning the lengthier, more effective, and therefore more club-oriented versions -- over the radio edits found on each volume of The Disco Years. No one who owns the Disco Years sets should go anywhere near these -- overlap abounds. The sixth volume includes Linda Clifford's "Shoot Your Best Shot," the Mighty Clouds of Joy's "Mighty High," Norma Jean Wright's "High Society," and A Taste of Honey's "Boogie Oogie Oogie." Anyone looking into a proper entry route into disco should keep their options open to compilations that offer more bang for the buck.
