The Disco Fever: 18 Disco Stompin' Greats compilation from K-Tel is weighed heavily toward the more soulful side of disco -- as opposed to the more pop-oriented side -- with a decent round of selections that doesn't merely go for the obvious. Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell," George McRae's "Rock Your Baby," and Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" will be more than familiar to the average listener, but there are some unlikely inclusions (including a very pre-disco "Band of Gold," from Freda Payne) that will help demonstrate both the roots and depth of the movement. No single disc can accurately portray disco -- there were too many incredible singles, both in the mainstream and in the underground -- but this is a nice budget-line title. Unfortunately, most of the cuts are provided as shorter single edits.
