Part of the second round of Disco Discharge compilations (along with European Connection, Classic Disco, and Pink Pounders), Diggin’ Deeper, as one might discern from the title, pulls up some of the rarest and most neglected selections in the series. Its depth recalls BBE’s Joey Negro-compiled Disco Spectrum compilations. Even though dozens of like-minded discs followed in the wake of that three-volume series, they didn’t come close to emptying the bank. Five of the songs here, in fact, appear on CD for the first time. The most significant one of that bunch has to be 2wice’s “You Set Me on Fire,” issued on a small Florida label -- though it sounds like it could have come out of the Brit funk scene -- and mixed by genius Paradise Garage DJ Larry Levan. Not everything is obscure. The Ritchie Family's “Quiet Village,” as exotic and stylish as anything from the August Darnell family, topped the Billboard club chart in 1977. Dan Hartman's 14-minute “Countdown/This Is It,” while neither as epic as “Relight My Fire” nor as infectiously giddy as “Instant Replay,” comes from the same album as the latter; a chart-topper itself. Several strains of late-‘70s and early-‘80s club music, not just purist disco, are represented, but elaborate arrangements figure prominently.
