Though there are nine tracks on this compilation, they come from only five artists, as three are Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango's (though one is just a remix of "Abele Dance") and three are from Senegal's Toure Kunda, two of Africa's more well-known musicians. Drummer Ginger Baker also has a song here, "Satou" -- played with Senegalese percussionist Aiyb Dieng -- and the group Mandingo have one as well, which makes Direction Africa a bit of a strange collection. Certainly Afro-pop, yes, but with too little variety to allow it to be more than just decent.
