AllMusic Review by

A variety of overlapping jazz-oriented dance bands from 1929-1930 whose records were released by the Banner, Dorn, Oriole, Sterling, Domino, Crown, Apex, Cameo, and Jewel labels are heard on this high-quality CD of rarities. Such fine studio players as trumpeter Tommy Gott, Andy Sannella (on clarinet and alto), pianist Russ Carlson, and Larry Abbott on reeds are among the few musicians who are identified, and most of the songs (which include "I Wanna Go Back to Indiana," "Cat's Kittens," "Pa's Old Hat," and "When the Moon Shines Down on Sunshine and Me") are long forgotten. However, the music is excellent, with clean swinging ensembles and concise meaningful solos; even most of the vocals are not too difficult to take (and they tend to only be a chorus long). The style of music has long been extinct but it still has its appeal, and this collection is very well done.
