Diana: Bonus Tracks Review

by Andy Kellman

The packaging of this set is confusingly identical to that of Diana, but it contains none of material from Diana Ross' 1980 studio album. Instead, it's an individual release of the second disc from that album's deluxe edition. Since the original Chic mixes appeared on the deluxe edition's first disc, none of them can be heard here, but this is a valuable compilation on its own, as it collects stray parts from Ross' discography recorded just before and shortly after Diana. This includes an extended alternate mix of "Love Hangover," a ten-minute 1977 medley of Supremes hits, and 12" versions of "I Ain't Been Licked" and "What You Gave Me," two songs written by Ashford & Simpson. Serious fans should seek out the two-disc deluxe edition of Diana; the Chic mixes, and the story behind their shelving, are fascinating.
