Coinciding with the end of the popular D.Gray-Man television series, a compilation of opening and ending theme music from the show was released in 2008. As with other such collections, the energy tends to move back and forth here, with opening themes using a high-impact piece and ending themes tending toward the sentimental ballad. The performers here are fairly well-known, eschewing the tendency for some series to shoot for up-and-comers for a tinge of newness (and presumably lower fees). The album starts with a sludgy, guitar-heavy piece from Abingdon Boys School. Nirgilis follows up with a slightly trance-influenced softer piece. June provides a funkier track with a tiny disco thump embedded into its backing tracks, Nami Tamaki puts energy back in with an otherwise unremarkable track, and Surface contributes a basic ending theme-style midtempo number. While much of the rest of the album moves along without much noteworthiness, a sudden dose of repetition and drive is given by Access' "Doubt and Trust" and something of a folk ballad from Rie Fu. The highlights are few, but fans of the series are likely to enjoy the longer versions of the theme songs as originally envisioned by the artists.
