Fleshgrind's Destined for Defilement is musically notable not only for the band's drilling guitar riffs and sudden stop/start tempo changes, but also for Rich Lipscomb's gurgling vocals -- which are even more extreme than most death metal/grindcore bands and sound as though he's trying to hork up Satan himself. Lyrics abound in gore and horror imagery, even though you can't understand any of them without the lyric booklet. Although it's difficult to grade stuff like this on taste and restraint, there's a streak of sexualized, usually misogynistic violence in nearly every song that goes beyond the usual over-the-top sick humor into something devoid of humor. It's a fine line that Fleshgrind don't walk nearly as well as Cannibal Corpse, who pioneered this kind of stuff and usually kept a knowing "we don't take this seriously" smirk on their faces (whether that's a valid excuse probably depends on how desensitized you are). Maybe it's all just for the shock value, but these graphically detailed rape/torture/murder/necrophilia scenes aren't entertainingly stupid -- they're indefensibly stupid.
