AllMusic Review by

Quite a step away from the disco-flavored funk found on the majority of Kenny Dixon, Jr.'s late-'90s Moodymann releases, the Dem Young Sconies EP instead heads into dark techno territory. The highlight here, no doubt, is the title track, which evokes a thick foreboding aura while its minimal arrangement aims for hypnotic results; quite effectively, the song succeeds in its mesmerizing aims, resulting in an eerie track more like what one would attribute to Dixon's Detroit techno peers, such as Underground Resistance or Richie Hawtin. Still, the song does retain his organic aesthetic, even as he works with machine-like sounds rather than filtered disco loops.
