Germany's Plastic City label has long been a mainstay of the tech-house movement, championing music built on the soulful layers and groovy rhythms of house but painted with a more clinical sonic palette akin to techno. This compilation, mixed by Plastic City marquee artist Timewriter, should be the definitive mix when it comes to the tech-house sound, with tracks produced by the upper echelon of this gray-area genre, including fellow Plastic City artist Terry Lee Brown Jr. as well as house celebrity Chris Brann under his Ananda Project guise. Tracks by hot techno commodities Samuel L. Sessions and Technasia also appear, along with classic tech-house prototype "The Dream," a 1994 production by future superstars BT, Deep Dish, and John Selway. All told, this mix covers moods that are just to the upbeat side of deep house, just to the downtempo side of techno, and just to the left of progressive. In other words, right smack in the middle of everything. Which means it's hard not to like this music. But, at the same time, it also lacks the sort of dynamic personality needed to make you love it. You will definitely wiggle your ass to this mix. But you probably won't remember it the next day.
