An excellent if obscure trad jazz trumpeter, Dave Whitney made his recording debut as a leader on this LP. Joined by a rhythm section (with guitarist Gray Sargent on six of the dozen selections) and tenor saxophonist Art Bartol, Whitney is mostly in the spotlight, taking several vocals along the way. Louis Armstrong is an obvious influence on Whitney's playing style, but he mostly has his own sound as he shows on such consistently hot but varied material as "At Sundown," "That's My Home," "I Love You, Samantha," "My Very Good Friend the Milkman," Isham Jones' "Spain," and Dave Frishberg's "Dear Bix." It seems strange that Dave Whitney did not become much better known, for he shows plenty of talent throughout this recommended (if hard to find) LP.
