Daud was the third Bollywood offering by A.R. Rahman after Rangeela and Fire. The expectations were high here due to the presence of same team that created the urban mainstream success of Rangeela. Unfortunately, both the film and the soundtrack fell short of any critical and commercial acclaim. Most of the songs were composed to accompany sensual scenes, or tried too hard to relive the glory of Rangeela. The lyrics were written by Mehboob, except for the song "Daud" which was penned by Sukhwinder Singh. The soundtrack proved relatively successful compared to the film, but compared to other masterpieces that Rahman composed during this decade, Daud was a letdown.
