Collecting some very fine players, this one disappoints as much for its missed potential as anything. With four outstanding horns (clarinetist Ben Goldberg, trombonist Marty Wehner, flutist Noel Jewkes, and saxophonist Rob Sudduth), plus a couple of vocalists and an attractive rhythm section, the listener could expect more sparks to fly. Instead, this one is clearly a mixed bag. Leader Graham Connor wrote the tunes and adds some attractive keyboard work. Goldberg and Wehner are compelling as soloists, and Sudduth is able to transcend the sometimes limp arrangements. The two vocalists show potential, but falter when tied to less than outstanding charts. Electric guitarist Alex Candelaria, plus electric bassists Trevor Dunn and Lee Alexander join drummer Smith Dobson, Jr. for some hard-hitting moments, sometimes sounding Hendrix influenced. In the end, though, this one does not quite pull itself together, leaving the listener with a feeling that more could have been accomplished.
