Another successful entry in Jamdown's successful annual series of mix albums, Dancehall Xplosion 2001 features a wealth of popular dancehall anthems mixes seamlessly, highlighted by big-name artists such as Beenie Man and Bounty Killer along with lesser-known yet equally talented Jamdown staples such as Mr. Vegas and Bling Dog. From the opening song to the closing seven-minute "Megamix," this album is absolutely swelling with energy. The beats show traces of drum'n'bass, hip-hop, and two-step rhythms, displaying just how contemporary the once insular dancehall style had become by the release of this album. Furthermore, the vocalists featured on these songs seem infused with limitless exuberance, spitting their rhymes with impressive dexterity and almost unintelligible speed. Overall, like previous Jamdown compilations, it's hard to go wrong here -- it's the best the genre has to offer in the way of crossover anthems, and is a great place for the curious to investigate the ever-evolving sound of dancehall.
