Full of haunting, eerie keyboards, Da Unhatched Breed is a perfect example of just how musical many of the rap albums of 1997 were. Play this CD (a commercial breakthrough for rap duo Kinfusion) next to some of the amelodic, highly abrasive recordings that Run-D.M.C. and LL Cool J made in the mid-1980s, and Kinfusion's tracks seem much more melodic by comparison. While those artists favored a bombastic musical assault, Kinfusion and other MCs who emerged in the mid-1990s preferred to groove and groove. The Detroit duo's boasting lyrics are fairly routine, and its observations on inner-city life on "Crooked Green Papers" and "Thug Dreams" aren't all that memorable. They certainly aren't saying anything that countless other rappers haven't already said. But musically, Da Unhatched Breed is a CD that commands attention.
