Da Funk is an odd collection that contains both pure funk and glossy pop-funk from the '70s. The two styles have different aesthetics, but since they both work a groove, the collection manages to gel into an entertaining, cohesive listen. There are too many lame cuts for it to be an essential sampler, but there are a number of great singles including Fatback's "Backstrokin'," Ray Parker, Jr.'s "Still in the Groove," Parliament's "Mothership Connection," James Brown's "The Payback" and George Duke's "Dukey Stick."
