Altoist Arthur Blythe is featured in a variety of settings on this fairly obscure Columbia LP. "Splain Thang," with its electronic rhythms, is a bit commercial but Bob Stewart's crazy electric tuba solo holds one's interest. "Esquinas" also uses electronics but fairly effectively as a pretty ballad. Otherwise, Blythe is heard with all-star groups that include cornetist Olu Dara, pianist John Hicks, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Bobby Battle; Geri Allen guests on electric piano during "Break Tune." The postbop music overall is not essential but should interest Arthur Blythe collectors.
