Cycles, Vol. 2 Review

by Jim Brenholts

Cycles features the surreal atmospheres of R. Carlos Nakai's ethereal Native American flutes accompanied by minimalist synth drones. This is a set of heavenly space music compositions with their bases firmly in the Northern plains and Southwestern deserts. Nakai's intricacies come from his simplicity and his simplicity comes from his intricacies. That is the overall charm and appeal of this CD. The very simple melodies enhance the listening experience and they boost its healing power. The power is in the experience. Listeners have the power of the situation; there are no hidden agendas. The music surrounds listeners with messages of love, serenity, peace, and harmony. These are the virtues that Native American spirituality embraces. Nakai does much honor to his heritage with his work in advancing his culture and its tenets. This dynamic CD will appeal to fans of Douglas Spotted Eagle, Cornsmoke, and Coyote Oldman.
