This set of saxophone-drums duets is not as fiery and avant-garde as one would expect. While there are no chordal instruments, the duo sounds very complete, even when performing a pair of Thelonious Monk tunes. Matt Belzer on alto and soprano outlines the melodies and hints at the chord structures even during his most adventurous improvisations while Scott Tiemann's drumming never dominates and leaves space for the implied other instruments. The music, which is well paced and covers a variety of moods, is pretty continuous with the pauses between songs being very brief. The duo works together very well, often thinking as one. The one negative of this otherwise satisfying effort is that the playing time is less than 27 minutes and really should have been twice as long. But what is here is well worth hearing.
