Covered in Guns Review

by James Christopher Monger

2010’s Covered in Guns collects 13 cover tunes from the veteran Sunset Strip metal outfit, almost all of which are carbon copies of the of the originals -- the only difference between the L.A. Guns version of "Don’t Fear the Reaper" and the Blue Öyster Cult version (arrangement-wise) lies in how much lower in the mix the cowbell sits. Vocalist Phil Lewis (founder Tracii Guns currently leads another version of the band) is more than capable of delivering the goods on glam/classic rock standards from KISS and Def Leppard, and the band does a nice job replicating all of the familiar parts, but the whole affair feels like a weekend jam session that should have been relegated to each member’s personal collection.
