MCA Special Products' Country Classics, Vol. 9 (1980-1993) covers a lot of ground, which is obvious from its title. A lot happened in the 13 years separating 1980 and 1993, and that's why the compilation doesn't really gel smoothly. That said, there aren't many duds on this disc, and there are many very, very good songs here, including the Bellamy Brothers' "Old Hippie," Moe Bandy's "Till I'm Too Old to Die Young," the Whites' "Pins and Needles," Billy Burnette's "Try Me," the Desert Rose Band's "Ashes of Love," the Kendalls' "Too Late," Ronnie McDowell's "All Tied Up," Tommy Roe's "Some Such Foolishness" and Lyle Lovett's "Cowboy Man." For many listeners, that lineup is enough to justify this disc's budget price.
