This installment in Sony's Country anthology series delivers 12 classics from the pride of Bakersfield, California, Buck Owens, and if you're the sort who is trying to recall when Owens recorded for a label now owned by Sony, the good news is these recordings have been licensed from the Owens estate and feature the classic original sides he cut for Capitol in the 1960s. The remastering sounds clear and crisp, and these songs capture Owens and his band (including legendary guitarist Don Rich) at the top of their form. However, with just a dozen tunes, this seems a bit skimpy, especially given how many Buck Owens collections are on the market and how much worthwhile material he recorded in the '60s and '70s. (From a "bang for the buck" standpoint, buyers would be better off with Rhino's 21 #1 Hits: The Ultimate Collection.) If you're looking for a budget-priced Buck Owens set and don't mind a short playing time, Country will do just fine, but one of the best country artists of his time deserves a little bit better than this.
