Rhino's Cosmic Grooves series offers a CD worth of songs all related to the traits of a particular zodiac sign, plus a book of musically oriented astrological insights about that sign and their relationships to other signs. It's a clever idea, that's for sure, but what's even better is that it's well-executed. The book isn't tossed off -- it's sharply written, filled with nice illustrations and delivered in hardcover binding. Furthermore, the song selections aren't predictable. Take the Leo volume, which features Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (standing in for charismatic), Joe Jackson's "I'm the Man" (chivalrous), Jimmy Cliff's "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" (inspired), Ronnie Montrose's "Leo Rising" (magnetic), Leo Sayers' "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" (shameless), and Cannonball Adderley's "Leo" (proud), among other equally diverse cuts. Yes, it covers a bunch of stylistic ground, but there's real wit behind the selections and even if it's eclectic, it's usually listenable. There's also real spirit behind the assembly of this record. Even for all its craft, this remains a novelty gift, but it's an inspired, entertaining one.
