A fantastic recording for fans of percussion in general and the Asian sounds of Japanese taiko drum ensemble Kodo in specific, this album takes a modern approach to traditional Chinese percussion instruments. Led by master drummer Wang Yi-Dong, a percussionist for the Chinese National Symphony Orchestra and instructor at the China Music Conservatory, the ensemble runs through an impressive eight-song set that showcases the dazzling virtuosity of the performers and the remarkable flexibility of percussion as a lead instrument. With roots in Chinese classical music and opera, these complex compositions might not appeal to the average listener, but for percussion aficionados, Copper Idiophones Over the Drums is a remarkable recording that proves drums can be a powerful means of artistic expression.
