Contrary Motion Review

by Rick Anderson

Lenahan is a New York-based Irish folk-rock band led by Tom Lenahan, a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (pipes, whistle, guitar). On this, the band's first all-acoustic album, he's joined by fiddler Clarence Ferrari and percussionist Rich Graziano, while electric bassist Mike Kilmer is absent. The program opens with a reel set called "Geese in the Bog" (what's a nice Irish boy like Tom Lenahan doing playing Highland bagpipes?) and continues through a nicely varied program of traditional and modern material, including Lenahan's own "Coat & Tie" and "Candle & the Flame," a rip-roaring version of "The Temperance Reel" (here titled "The Teetotaller") and a great arrangement of "The Road to Lisdoonvarna." Lenahan's singing isn't going to change the world, but the band has lots of energy and plays with a good-natured abandon that will appeal to fans of rock'n'reel.
