Contra la Marea is a compilation of Puerto Rican vocalist Manny Manuel's merengue hits. One of the most remarkable voices of the large generation of singers who came of age during the music's heyday in the 1990s, Manuel quickly distinguished himself from the pack with hits like "Rey de Corazones" off his debut album of the same name. Other tracks here, including "Estrellita," "Los Hombres No Deben Llorar," and "Mi Problema," are from that album as well. The rest of the tunes on the set range from throughout Manuel's career: "El Peor de Mis Fracasos," "Ya Te Olvidé," and the title cut are also featured. While it's true that the merengue is no longer the dance craze it once was, the music here, apart from those steps, stands on its own.
