Both pianist Bill Mays and guitarist Ed Bickert are consummate players who have added a lot to every recording session in which either man has been a participant. However, both of them excel at the art of give and take in a duo setting; Mays in his earlier dates with bassist Ray Drummond and Bickert in his duets with valve trombonist Rob McConnell and bassist Don Thompson. Bickert's cool, soft tone is complemented by Mays' rich chords. Their subtle performance of "Taking a Chance on Love," the playful look at "On the Trail," as well as the lyrical ballad "Quietly" and and funky "Bick's Bag" (two fine originals by the pianist) are among the many highlights by this fine duo. A follow-up is long overdue.
