AllMusic Review by

This two-disc set, which features early hard bop sextet and quartet recordings from sessions held May 9, 1952, April 20, 1953 and March 6, 1954, essentially combines in one convenient package the Blue Note material which has been available under the titles Miles Davis, Vol. 1 and Miles Davis, Vol. 2. The emerging Miles "birth of the cool" vision isn't quite set here, but these aren't bad tracks at all. It's interesting to compare the 1952 and 1953 dates, when Davis was deep in his heroin addiction, to the 1954 session, which features a Davis who was no longer using. Not surprisingly, the latter sides are a good bit livelier sounding.
