Complete Charlie Barnet, Vol. 4 (1940) Review

by Scott Yanow

The fourth of six two-LP sets in this perfectly done reissue series contains all of the Charlie Barnet big-band's recordings from a busy four-month period. Highpoints include "Leapin' at the Lincoln," "Afternoon of a Moax," "Flying Home," "No Name Jive" and "Rockin' in Rhythm." The brief electric guitar solos of Bus Etri are quite interesting and, even if there are an excess of vocals, those of Mary Ann McCall are generally worth hearing.
